From shaking paws to urinating in the toilet, barking mad Brits reveal the top 10 most ‘human like’ things their dogs can do.

A poll of 2,000 Dog UK owners by Peamutt Butter unearthed the weird and wonderful tricks they have taught their fur babies. Half of those polled revealed they can ‘shake hands’ with their dog, while 43% watch TV with their pooch.

Amusingly one in 10 Brits confessed their dog knows how to urinate in the toilet, with a similar number (9%) able to flush the loo when they are finished.

Others claimed man’s best friend can laugh (bark) at their jokes (12%) and dance around the room with them (16%).

The research marks the launch of Peamutt Balls, a new on-the go treat for dogs – so good the manufacturer warns dog owners may ‘sneak a bite’.

Sally Addenbrook, from Peamutt Butter, said: “Within our research we found a bizarre number of people (45%) confessed to eating their dogs treats when out on a walk with their pup. Taking a bag of our new Peamutt Balls – delicious, pocket-sized treats will satisfy those peanut butter cravings – for your dogs that is…

“From using the toilet to pushing a pram, Britian’s nutty dog owners really take the notion of man’s best friend to a new level. Our treats help to support and nurture that bond.”

Barking mad Brits reveal the top ten most ‘human-like’ things people claim their dog can do:

New poll crowns Spaniels as the least spoilt breed in the UK

Barking mad Brits are known for truly spoiling their dogs – Today Peamutt Butter reveals the top offenders by breed

Spaniel dog owners are the least needy of their pets, a survey of UK dog owners has found.

The poll by dog food brand Peamutt Butter asked 2,000 British dog owners how much they spoil and prioritise their beloved fur babies and the differences by breed were staggering.

Among the highest-ranking spoilt breeds were Boxers, Corgis and French Bulldogs, while family favourites such as Golden Retrievers and Spaniels lived a simple dog’s life.

Spaniel dog owners were the cheapest when it came to gifts spending no more than £20 on their pet, reluctant to work from home through fear of spoiling their dog (73%) and the least likely of any breed to cancel on friends for the sake of their pooch (13%).

The survey revealed British dog owners spend an average per year of £225 on training their dog, £322 on grooming and £321 on foodie treats and snacks.

But for Corgi dog owners training their pooch was a top priority. A third (37%) of the Corgi owners admitted they had spent as much as £1500 training their dogs, six times the national average.

Perhaps not so surprising Poodle owners spend as much as £600 per year on grooming, double the national average and three times as much as other breeds.

Big dog problems, a third (33%) of Great Dane owners spent as much as £5,000 per year on dog treats and snacks, with Beagles being the only other breed to be as spoilt when it came to delicious snacks (25%).

The research by Peamutt Butter revealed the surprising big spender when it came to gifts were German Pointer dog parents – with 33% of those surveyed confessing to racking up between £600 and £1000 per birthday. Boxers, Corgis and Bulldogs coming in a close second (all 10%).

And the ‘sausage dog’ effect hit people at Christmas, with Dachshunds being the most likely to be spoilt during the festive season with 67% spending more than £1000 on presents from Santa Paws.

When chatting to their dog, Boxer owners were the most likely to get into politics (22%) than any other breed. 66% of Great Dane owners dished the dirt on their dating life – three times that of any other breed. And a third of Labrador owners confessed to talking about their spouse or partner.

German pointer owners were the most likely to confide in their dogs, (83%) followed by Dachshund (66%) and Boxers (57%).

Keen to always keep their pooch by their side, Border Collie owners were the most likely to cancel on their friends to hang out with their dog (50%). And Golden retriever owners were the most likely to consider not leaving the country, so they didn’t have to leave the dog behind (63%).

The rise of dog parents, Pug owners (67%) were the most likely to refer to their dog as a fur baby, whereas those with a terrier didn’t share the same sentiment (12%).

Sally Addenbrook, from Peamutt Butter, said: “No matter what the breed, we love to both cherish and treat our dogs and Peamutt Butter is perfect for enriching our dog’s days as well as being a tasty treat they’ll love you for.

“Spread on a lick mat to keep them busy, calm them down and reduce anxiety. Peamutt Butter is an affordable choice for dogs’ owners, so even Spaniels can have a bit of a treat sometimes.”

Britain’s top dog spoiling awards by Peamutt Butter – by breed:

'Co-dependent' pup parents of the pandemic are twice as likely to spoil their pooch, survey says

SHOULD COVID-FUR BABIES START DOG SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER?

A poll of UK dog owners reveals ‘co-dependent’ pup-parents of the pandemic are twice as likely to spoil their pooch

With the first babies of the pandemic starting primary school this September, what happened to those lockdown ‘fur babies’ five years on?

Amusing new data lifts the lid on ‘co-dependent’ pandemic dog-parents as they continue to spoil and splurge on their lockdown pups – prioritising the happiness of their dog over their human relationships, work and in some cases, even their children.

An intense relationship from the start, a new survey of 2,008 dog owners in the UK found that those who got a dog during lockdown were 10% more likely to spend money on their dogs than their partners or friends.

The research, by leading pet treat Peamutt Butter, found lockdown pup-parents were twice as likely to go for joint health treatments – such as see the chiropractor – with their dog than pre-pandemic dog owners (7% vs 13%). They were also more likely to wear matching clothes (7% vs 12%) and carry their dog like a baby around the shops (5% vs 10%).

And the nuttiness continues, as double the number of lockdown dog owners compared to non-covid pet parents confessed to taking their pooch to a funeral or wedding. And just under 10% of those surveyed admitted they held a post-pandemic puppy shower for their dog.

Struggling with the concept of separation, one in five lockdown dog owners believed they worried more about their pet care or dog walker than their children’s childcare, with a similar number confessing they prefer spending time with their pooch than their kids.

Five years on from the first lockdown, more than a third (37%) surveyed said they’d had a career change to ensure they could work from home with their dog, as well as changing their home and car to improve their dog’s quality of life.

And 65% said they won’t go on holiday or abroad at fear of leaving the dog behind.

Perhaps it’s time to take stock; while nearly 50% of those surveyed said they treat their dog more than they treat themselves, lockdown pup parents were half as likely to invest in training or puppy school for their dog.

Dog behaviourist expert, Nanci Creedon, of Nanci Creedon Academy of Dog Trainers, said: “We have seen lots of reports of separation anxiety in Covid dogs, too much attention and focus has left some pets spoilt and high maintenance. This September, perhaps it’s not just the covid-babies that should be starting school. Training can happen at any age, there is still time to change bad habits, and address behavioural issues linked to lockdown lifestyle patterns.

“Ultimately it starts with the owners. The data shows Brits have become co-dependent on their dogs, and it appears difficult to outline who needs who more. Dogs bring so much joy to a home, but they need their own space, so I urge Britain’s dog owners to go and hang out with their human friends every once-in-a-while.”

A quarter of the owners surveyed by Peamutt Butter believed their dog to be their ‘first born’ child.

And when it comes to spoiling our pooches, Brits are experts, more than 50% admitted they would spend as much as £100 on their dog’s birthday or Christmas gifts, with 31 of 2008 people surveyed spending nearly £3,000 on their dogs birthday per year.

Sally Addenbrook, brand marketing manager from Peamutt Butter, said: “When we created Peamutt Butter we made it because we believed our dogs were missing out on the treat of peanut butter. And every dog-mad pet owner wants to give their dogs the very best.

“We wanted something that was made solely for dogs and could be spread on their toys or lick mats, to enrich and calm them and to help build a stronger bond between human and dog.”

Peamutt Butter was crafted by this family of dog lovers to ensure everyone in the family can enjoy the joys of the nutty treat.
