Kennel Club's International Agility Festival celebrates successful results for 2024

The Kennel Club International Agility Festival concluded four exciting days of agility excellence on Sunday 11 August 2024. The festival saw thousands of dogs and their handlers, from across the UK and all over the world, compete in over 200 competitions at Rutland Showground, Oakham.

The festival, supported by Skinner's, welcomed dogs of every size, shape and breed, to take part in competitions across four size categories, 18 rings and 200 classes. Competitors displayed high levels of skill and training, navigating through courses with various obstacles including hurdles, poles, tunnels and more.

Competition was tough, and some top dogs and their handlers are now celebrating qualifying for London Arena agility events at the London International Horse Show in December, with others heading to the world's greatest dog show, Crufts, in March 2025.

Ben Skinner, of Skinner's, said: "A huge congratulations to each of the winners and participants of The Kennel Club International Agility Festival. It is a pleasure to see all these amazing dogs and their owners take part in the competitions – we are always proud to sponsor this wonderful event.

Agility Team GB celebrate successful European Open Championships

The Kennel Club would like to congratulate Agility Team GB on their success at the FCI's European Open Agility Championships, which concluded this weekend, and saw the team win a total of six medals, including one gold.

Agility Team GB competed over three days at the Championships, with handlers and their dogs showing an impressive level of skill across both team and individual competitions. This was also the first Championship event in history that Team GB achieved three medals in the team finals.

The European Open Agility Championships were held in the UK for the first time, hosted by The Kennel Club at Dallas Burston Polo Club in Southam, and were sponsored by Agria Pet Insurance, with additional support from Galican, South West Agility Goods and 4 Legged Flix.

Medals were won in the following competitions:

Gold medals:

Martin Reid, from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, with his Shetland Sheepdog Get It With Eager to Work (Selfie) in the Small Individual competition. This partnership won gold at the European Championships in 2023 which meant they defended their title.

Silver medals:

Marita Ogilvie, from Bourne, Lincolnshire, with Border Collie, Darleyfalls Cryptic Enigma (Cicada) in the Intermediate Individual competition – this is Marita's first international medal

Bronze medals:

Euan Paterson, from Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, with his Border Collie Ag Ch Devongem Quick Time (Crazee) retained their bronze medal (also won in 2023) in the Intermediate Individual competition
Team GB Time for Tea won a bronze medal in the Small Team finals – the first Small Team medal for Team GB. The team was comprised of Jo Gleed and Devongem Classic (Sinner); Karen Boardman and Devongem Tiz Unbeatable (Robyn); Laura Farrow and Quinlent Dubplate Special (Dubs); and Liz Naylor and Devongem Bright Skye at Hornspike
Team GB Remake won a bronze medal in the Medium Team finals – securing a medal for the third consecutive year. The team were chosen following the two try out days which were held at Dog Sports, Derby.

Agility Team GB is supported by The Kennel Club, Natural Instinct, South West Agility Goods, Dog Sports Derby and Galican.

Agility Team GB Manager, Greg Derrett, commented: "Competing on home soil added a little extra pressure this year on our handlers to perform and I am thrilled with the results they achieved while representing Great Britain at this year's European Open Championships!

"Winning so many of medals, from all four heights and in both the individual and team events, shows the depth of talent we have in British Agility."

European Open Agility Championships

New heart survey open to all breeds

The Kennel Club, in partnership with the Veterinary Cardiology Society (VCS), has developed a new online survey, which aims to improve understanding of prevalence and type of heart disease affecting different pedigree dog breeds.

The survey hopes to gain insight which will help get a better understanding of the need for heart testing across breeds, as well as any breed-specific nuances that may influence heart disease development. The results will be used to direct new research to areas that require further attention.

The survey is open to all dog owners of all breeds – for both dogs that may currently be living or who have sadly passed away.

Charlotte McNamara, Head of Health at The Kennel Club said: "Heart disease is a broad term used to describe a range of abnormalities that affect the normal function of the heart. We are asking dog owners to kindly spend a few minutes to complete the survey for all dogs owned, either now or in the past, even if they have never been affected by heart disease. The results will allow us to direct new research to areas that require further attention. We thank everyone for taking the time to contribute to this research and for help in improving canine heart health."

The survey will be managed and results collected by The Kennel Club. All personal information given will be kept confidential and be presented anonymously. To complete the survey, please click here. The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.

The Kennel Club takes insights from research and feeds them into its Breed Health and Conservation plans, so that we can work with breeders to give information and guidance about how to ensure the future health of pedigree breeds. These plans, which enable The Kennel Club to track progress and make meaningful changes to breed health, have been developed as a result of reviewing more than 4000 research papers, which makes these plans the most comprehensive review of pedigree health data anywhere in the world.

MSPs and their dogs compete for prestigious Holyrood Dog of the Year title

On Monday 29th April, 13 MSPs will go paw-to-paw to win the coveted title of 'Holyrood Dog of the Year' 2024.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes, regardless of breed, creed or 'pawlitical' persuasion, will be strutting their stuff with their MSP owners, as they head to the Scottish Parliament gardens at Horse Wynd, Edinburgh, to see who will be crowned top dog.

Organised jointly by The Kennel Club and Dogs Trust, the competition celebrates the unique bond between dogs and their owners and offers the opportunity for MSPs to show off their loyal canine companions.

The 2024 contenders vying for a vote are as follows:

MSPs are also calling for their supporters to vote for them online, in a bid to win the 'pawblic' vote, with additional judging on the day which will review the contestants on their good dog deeds and winning personalities, and one lucky dog will take home the ultimate parliamentary privilege of the 'Holyrood Dog of the Year 2024' title.

Favoured Easter food poses hidden hazard to dogs

New statistics released today (26 March) by The Kennel Club show that cases of grape and raisin poisoning in dogs were 117% higher than those of chocolate poisoning, during the Easter months in 2023.

The fruits, which can be found in a number of Easter treats – such as hot cross buns and Simnel cake – are toxic to dogs, even in small amounts, and as such, the organisation is urging pet owners to keep these and chocolate well away from dogs over the coming weeks.

The data, collected by Kennel Club Pet Insurance provided by Agria, also revealed that while claims made for chocolate poisoning were up by a third (33%) during March and April last year, compared to the monthly average, the total number of cases during this period saw a 13% decrease compared to Easter 2022. Conversely, claims for grape and raisin intoxication showed an opposite trend, increasing by 12% compared to 2022, indicating that dog owners are less aware of how dangerous these foods are to our dogs.

Robin Hargreaves, Senior Veterinary Advisor for Agria Pet Insurance, commented: "While many owners are aware of how toxic chocolate is to their pets, there are in fact a number of other foods that present a real danger to dogs over Easter, such as hot cross buns and Simnel cake. Raisins and grapes are poisonous to our pets and there are often no symptoms until the dog becomes very ill, very suddenly. Owners who think their pets have ingested any of these foods should contact their vet immediately.

"It is so important to be vigilant, especially at this time of year, and to keep all Easter treats far from reach, to not only prevent heartache, but avoid any unexpected vet fees over the bank holiday period."

Stephen and Siobhán MacDonnell, from Cheltenham, know only too well the emotional and financial toll an Easter snack in the wrong paws can cause. Last Easter, Bowie, a one-year-old Flat Coated Retriever, helped himself to three leftover hot cross buns that had been left in easy reach. The pair rushed their beloved dog to their vets for emergency treatment, where he stayed for two days. Thankfully he suffered no lasting effects, but the ordeal, as well as being incredibly traumatic, also resulted in a vet bill of almost £2,000 – fortunately covered by Bowie's insurance policy.

Siobhán said: "Stephen and I had shared half a hot cross bun, each with a cup of coffee but very foolishly left the remaining three in the packet on the kitchen island. We had only left the kitchen for five minutes but when we returned, the only evidence of Bowie's thievery was the plastic packaging and cardboard tray left on the floor. Luckily, we knew how dangerous raisins can be to dogs, so we whisked him off to the vet immediately, but we can't bear to imagine what could have happened if we hadn't known."

Bill Lambert, dog health expert at The Kennel Club added: "Easter should be a time of fun and enjoyment but, with so much food in the house, it's vital that owners keep a careful eye on their pets.

"Some of the foods we love to eat during this time can also seem very tempting to our dogs, and their acute sense of smell means they are very adept at finding them! Unfortunately, many of these can be dangerous, and it's not just chocolate that poses a threat, so it is crucial that owners keep all Easter food out of paws' reach."

To help owners navigate both the Easter holidays, and the start of Spring safely, The Kennel Club has shared the following tips:

Seasonal snacks

For many households at this time of year, Easter brings a wealth of different festive food into the household, and a dog's acute sense of smell means they can unintentionally get hold of poisonous food. If you suspect your dog has eaten chocolate, grapes or raisins, even a small amount, seek veterinary advice immediately.

Owners should be vigilant to any Easter food brought into the house, particularly chocolate, hot cross buns and Simnel cake, and ensure these are placed safely out of reach – high up and behind closed cupboard doors. Owners should also be wary of their dog eating any food or leftovers from an Easter Sunday roast, as much of it will be too salty or too fatty for them.

For those taking part in a chocolate egg hunt, it is important that dogs are kept away during this activity and that owners keep track of how many chocolates are hidden, so they can ensure they are all found before welcoming a dog back to the area.

Easter entertaining

Celebrations often mean busier households and can bring more unfamiliar noises, smells and new activities for four-legged friends, which might become overwhelming.

To avoid any seasonal stress, continue their usual walking and eating routine. If welcoming more people into your home, make sure your dog still has their usual personal space so they can retreat to their bed as and when they need it.

Flora and fauna

Several common flowers, including daffodils, tulips and spring crocuses can be poisonous to dogs, so owners should be alert on walks and in the garden, especially if bulbs were planted earlier in the year.

Snails, toads, ticks and adders are more common in spring and are also potential health hazards to dogs as they can cause infections, bites or stings. During and after spending time outside, owners should be vigilant in checking a dog's fur for ticks. Countryside cautions

The combination of warmer weather as well as the abundance of longer weekends mean many will be going further afield for dog walks and potentially visiting new areas. Before embarking on a new walking route in the countryside, it is important to understand how to be responsible for you and your dog and to research the area that you are visiting. Spring brings an abundance of wildlife and livestock to the countryside, especially during lambing season. Whenever you are in proximity of livestock or cattle you must have your dog on a lead, under control and prevent your dog from approaching or chasing any livestock or wildlife. Be sure to check the latest local restrictions on dog walking areas and be aware that sometimes dogs are banned from areas such as beaches or fields during certain months, for everyone's safety.

If travelling somewhere by car, dogs must never be left unattended in the vehicle, regardless of the temperature, even if the car has been left in the shade or with the windows open. If you are travelling for a long period of time, make sure you take the necessary precautions, such as making plenty of stops, having lots of water and an appropriate shady space for your dog.

New Exhibition: Kennel Club rewinds time looking at dogs in ads

The Kennel Club Art Gallery, based in Mayfair, London, has unveiled a new exhibition, open to the public now, tracing canines featuring in commercials.

The exhibition tracks the beginnings of marketing and advertising moguls discovering the enticing power of puppy dog eyes to sell products and delves deep into the variety of places and products that feature man's best friend, alongside cultural shifts in Britain and across the world.

Antique advertisements, artefacts and trophies dating back to the mid-19th century, and more modern unique collectables including badges, water bowls, postcards, toys and original artworks, have been carefully curated to illustrate how the beginnings of 'pet culture' impacted advertising and marketing.

Ciara Farrell, The Kennel Club's Library and Collections manager, said: "This new exhibition is a wonderful visualisation of how dogs increasingly became an integral part of our society and families.

"Visitors may recognise some well-known brands, and those clued up on their dog history will spot Spratt's Pet Food, created by James Spratt, who is beloved by all dogs for creating the first commercial dog biscuit in 1862. Up until the social and economic changes of the 19th century, dogs were an unaffordable luxury for most people, but from the mid-19th century to early 20th century pet culture really started to kick off, with more homes welcoming dogs as companions.

"James Spratt's dog biscuit company started a revolution in how people fed and cared for their dogs and Spratt's Pet Food became a major sponsor of dog shows at the time. The market for health products, accessories and services for dogs then started to take off."

With advertising reflecting, and sometimes even creating, cultural shifts in the popularity of dogs, and individual breeds, due to the exposure from iconic brands, this exhibition looks back over the power of advertising over the years and seeks to highlight the importance of people doing their research into dog ownership and different dog breeds, rather than being influenced by advertising or celebrity endorsement.

The exhibition is open to the public, by appointment only, at The Kennel Club Art Gallery at 10 Clarges Street, Mayfair, W1J 8AB, from Monday - Friday 9:30am to 4:30pm from now until 30 August 2024.

The Kennel Club has announced the agility teams which will represent Great Britain at the European Open Agility Championships, hosted by The Kennel Club in Warwickshire, from 1 – 4 August, and the FCI Agility World Championships in Opglabbeek, Belgium, from 1 – 6 October.

The successful handlers and dogs were chosen following two try-out weekend events, which concluded at Dog Sports Derby, Agility Team GB sponsor, on 17 March.

The Kennel Club congratulates all the handlers who have been selected to represent Agility Team GB this year. In addition to being sponsored by The Kennel Club and Dog Sports Derby, the team is also kindly supported by Natural Instinct, SWAG K9 and Galican.

This year there were opportunities for win-on places for both the European Open Championship team, and the Agility World Championship team. Those winning the coveted spots were:

New DNA testing scheme for Dobermann

The Kennel Club has approved a new official DNA testing scheme for DINGS2 in the Dobermann, following consultation with the breed's health co-ordinator on behalf of the breed. DINGS is an early-onset neurological disease that causes a range of symptoms, and often leads to euthanasia due to poor quality of life.

The disease is described as autosomal-recessive. This means that a dog must inherit two copies of an abnormal gene (one from its mother and one from its father) before its health is affected.

Tested dogs will be recorded on The Kennel Club systems as either:

Clear

The dog does not have any copies of the abnormal gene associated with the disease. The dog is highly unlikely to be clinically affected and will only pass on a normal copy of the gene to a puppy.

Carrier

The dog has one copy of the normal gene and one copy of the abnormal gene associated with the disease. The dog is highly unlikely to be clinically affected, but may pass one copy of the normal gene, or one copy of the abnormal gene on to a puppy.

Affected

The dog has two copies of the abnormal gene associated with the disease. The dog will likely be clinically affected by the disorder and will pass one copy of the abnormal gene on to any potential offspring.

Test results will be added to the dog's registration details which will trigger the publication of the result in the next available Breed Records Supplement and also on the Health Test Results Finder on The Kennel Club website.

Results for dogs already tested can also be recorded, but owners will need to submit copies of the DNA certificates themselves. DNA test certificates should be scanned and emailed to health.results@thekennelclub.org.uk.

Owners are reminded that:

from August 2018, it is mandatory that the dog's microchip (or tattoo) is recorded along with either the dog's registered name or registered number on any DNA certificates. Any test results issued after that date that do not carry these identifying features will not be accepted.
The Kennel Club has a set of criteria that we request DNA testing laboratories to meet to enable us to record their results, helping to maintain and protect the integrity of results that appear on a dog's records. We have updated the list of laboratories that we accept results from and strongly advise that customers ensure their chosen laboratory is included on our revised list if they wish The Kennel Club to record and publish the results. Results from laboratories not included on this list will not be recorded.

The Kennel Club constantly reviews DNA testing schemes in conjunction with breed clubs to ensure that breeders are supported with resources which help them to make responsible breeding decisions. The Kennel Club works alongside breed clubs and breed health coordinators in a collaborative effort to improve the health of pedigree dogs and is happy to consider a club's request to add a new DNA test to its lists. A formal request from the breed's health coordinator or a majority request from the breed clubs is normally required to do this.

Crufts to introduce health entry requirements for popular brachycephalic breeds from 2025

To continue to ensure that dog shows remain an effective platform to monitor and improve dog health, The Kennel Club has announced it is introducing health-related entry requirements for some brachycephalic breeds for Crufts 2025.

All eligible Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs will need to have a valid Respiratory Function Grading scheme assessment result to compete at Crufts 2025. Assessments must be undertaken every two years and those assessed as grade 3 will not be able enter the competition.

The Respiratory Function Grading scheme, developed by the University of Cambridge and The Kennel Club, assesses Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs for a breathing disorder called brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). The assessment, which can be carried out by specially-trained assessors located across the UK, involves listening to the dog's airway both before and after an exercise tolerance test. Assessors then use a pre-defined protocol to grade the dog from zero to three. Dogs graded as zero will be free of respiratory signs of BOAS, while dogs graded as three will show severe respiratory signs of BOAS, indicating that further veterinary examination is advised.

Following an increase in the popularity of some brachycephalic dogs and the launch of The Kennel Club's report: 'Play Your Part: Breeding, Buying and Bringing up Brachycephalic Dogs Better', which urges collaboration to address health issues, this new requirement for Crufts 2025 is part of The Kennel Club's commitment to improving brachycephalic dog health.

Charlotte McNamara, Head of Health at The Kennel Club, commented: "Protecting and improving the health of brachycephalic breeds remains one of our top priorities and while the role of dog shows in shaping the purchasing trends of the wider general public is minimal, they do provide a platform to educate breeders and the dog owning public.

"We hope that introducing a health-related entry requirement for Pugs, Bulldogs and French for Crufts 2025 will influence a wider positive impact on dog health. Crufts is a great opportunity to showcase good examples of each recognised breed, and celebrate the work being carried out by responsible breeders and breed clubs to protect and improve health. The Respiratory Function Grading scheme is the strongest mechanism currently available to improve the breathing of these breeds, collect data on BOAS, and demonstrate the commitment of the show community to tackling BOAS within these breeds."

Dr Laura Hamilton, veterinary surgeon and French Bulldog Breed Health Coordinator added: "Some brachycephalic breeds, including French Bulldogs, are hugely popular, with little to no awareness amongst puppy buyers of any health concerns, and many rogue breeders producing puppies simply for profit. And whilst Crufts can and does educate people about important issues around dog ownership and health, and this new entry requirement for the 2025 event is welcome and we hope will have a positive wider impact, realistically social media and celebrity culture tends to have a bigger influence. It's absolutely crucial that any would-be owner fully researches the breed before making any decisions, speaks to experts, and finds a responsible breeder who health screens their dogs using the RFG scheme."

The Kennel Club is also expanding its Breed Watch system, which enables anyone involved in the world of dogs to develop their knowledge and identify, monitor and report any breed-specific conformational issues which may impact on health. The changes, outlined below, will ensure more extensive monitoring of health and welfare concerns that are detrimental to a dog's wellbeing.

From September 2024, Breed Watch will introduce:

A new digital judges' health monitoring form – which will be integrated into judging contracts, judges' training and Breed Appreciation Days – and a reminder process;
Updated guidance for veterinary health checks at dog shows;
Updated points of concern wording for all breeds to ensure consistency and clarity, following consultation with breed clubs.

The changes should help not only judges, but also breeders, exhibitors and owners, to secure the future of healthy and happy pedigree dogs, and is part of The Kennel Club's continued commitment to education about how to protect and improve health.

Ian Seath, Chairman of The Kennel's Club's Breed Standards and Conformation Health Group, commented: "The show ring can, and should, be a force for improving dog health, and all those involved – from judges and exhibitors, to vets who perform checks – have an important role to play.

"The decision to introduce these changes was made by The Kennel Club Dog Health Group, which is made up of independent vets, dog experts, canine researchers and welfare organisations, following a recommendation from the group's Breed Standards and Conformation sub-group, and approval from The Kennel Club Board."
