Cats Protection is hosting its fifth annual online Cat Behaviour Conference on Friday 13 September to help shed light on the behaviour of one of the nation's favourite pets.

The theme of this year's event is 'Cat Connections', with sessions exploring the intricate link between cat behaviour and welfare.

Attendees will hear from expert speakers on a range of topics from managing stress in cats and the challenges faced by cats in rescue, to the critical role of advocacy in promoting ethical feline behaviour practices. There will also be question and answer sessions, with plenty of opportunity to interact with the speakers about their talks.

Cats Protection Central Behaviour Officer, Daniel Warren-Cummings, explains: "Cats are notoriously mysterious and we're constantly learning more about their behaviour. At Cats Protection, we're dedicated to helping people see the world through cats' eyes and this conference is a great way for us to do just that.

"Anyone wanting to gain insight into cat behaviour and welfare, on a professional or personal level, is welcome to attend - from animal shelter workers, veterinary staff and students to budding behaviourists and cat enthusiasts."

The day will count as seven hours of Continuing Professional Development for those who need it and CPD certificates will be available after attending the whole conference.

The conference is hosted by The Webinar Vet, and tickets can be purchased at a cost of £50 plus VAT here: www.thewebinarvet.com/events/cat-connections

It runs from 9am to 5.30pm on 13 September and content will be available for up to six months after the event for anyone wishing to revisit their favourite talks or catch up on any they missed.

Cats Protection's work, including that of the Behaviour team, is kindly supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery, who have raised over £9.9m for the charity since 2018.

"We'd particularly like to thank players of People's Postcode Lottery for their ongoing support of our work," added Daniel. "The more people understand cats and their needs, the better they're treated. Together we are making a better life for cats, because life is better with cats."

Category

Cats

Tags

Cats Protection

Cat behaviour conference

From sociable cats that spread cheer wherever they go, to caring cats who provide comfort in times of need, 11 marvellous moggies are in the running to be named Cats Protection's National Cat of the Year 2024.

Voting for the winners of each of four categories closes at midday on 30 August – then a panel of distinguished judges will choose the overall National Cat of the Year, to be announced at a ceremony hosted by best-selling author and television presenter Dawn O'Porter at London's One Marylebone on 18 September.

This year's top cat will follow in the pawprints of previous winner Zebby who was crowned National Cat of the Year 2023 in honour of the support he gives his deaf owner Genevieve Moss, alerting her to sounds around their home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

Cats Protection's National Cat Awards, organised by the UK's largest feline welfare charity, recognises the incredible bond between cats and people, proving that life is better with cats. The four categories in the 2024 Awards are Connected Cats, Family Cats, Senior Cats and Incredible Cats. Now, cat lovers have until noon on 30 August to vote for their favourite finalist by visiting www.cats.org.uk/nca.

Finalists in this year's Awards include:

Marley – the fluffy heart of the home at a safehouse for women fleeing modern slavery.

Cilla – a stray who moved into a primary school, calming pupils before their SATs and raising £5,000 to restock the library. Cilla is looking forward to being reunited with all her friends when the schools go back in September.

Marmaduke – a big ginger softie, he helped his owner recover from the trauma of working as an emergency ambulance technician at the Manchester Arena on the night of the 2017 attack.

Seth – at 16 years old, this plucky pensioner refused to slow down when a vicious dog attack left him with a dislocated hip.

Self-confessed cat lady Dawn O'Porter said: "I'm so pleased to be back to present the National Cat Awards again this year. I love hearing the amazing stories about the nominated cats and learning how these incredible animals have made lives better for their families. It really is the ultimate event for cat people."

Cats Protection's Marketing and Income Generation Director Catherine Cottrell said: "The National Cat Awards is an annual celebration of the nation's love of cats and this year we received over 1,500 entries. Some of our finalists have shown incredible intuition in understanding their owners' needs; others are total extroverts, becoming local celebrities. Then there are the plucky pusses like William, undaunted by losing a leg, and Miss Dave Mittens who is (nearly) as sprightly as a kitten at the grand old age of 21. The central message of all the stories is that cats are cherished family members who add so much love to their owners' lives. I can't wait to see who the public chooses as their winners."

Category winners will each win a prize package of a trophy, a £200 pet store voucher and a year's subscription to Cats Protection's The Cat magazine, with the National Cat of the Year also receiving an overall winner trophy.

Category

Cats

Tags

National Cat Awards

Cats Protection

Cat owners urged to microchip pets ahead of new law to aid rehoming charities

Families are being urged to microchip their cats to help ease the burden on rescue centres and rehoming charities.

From June 10, all domestic cats in England must be microchipped, and owners who fail to comply could face fines of up to £500. An estimated 2.3 million cats in the UK remain unchipped, which poses challenges for identification and reunion with their owners.

Pet charities could cut costs relating to feeding, sheltering, and rehoming if every cat had a microchip linking them to their owners.

Amelia Battersby, a vet at Pet Health Club — a preventative healthcare subscription that includes microchipping among its benefits — highlighted the numerous advantages of microchipping. She said: "Microchipping cats is not only about complying with the new law but also about ensuring the welfare of our pets.

"It offers a straightforward solution for pet owners to keep their cats safe and should also help reduce the number of lost cats ending up in rescue centres."

Amelia has helped develop a comprehensive resource for cat owners concerned about the new legislation, featuring Q&As, step-by-step guides, and more information, which you can visit by clicking here.

Microchipping is quick, relatively painless, and affordable, with many vet practices, including those offering Pet Health Club, providing the service for between £10 and £50. Around 160,000 cats end up in shelters and rescue centres across the UK every year, and it's hoped compulsory microchipping will help reduce this number.

"Losing a cat is a terrible experience for both pets and their owners," said Amelia, who is based at Holly House Vets in Leeds. "If microchipping improves the chances of just one lost cat being returned to its owner, then it's worth doing.

"This should also relieve the burden on animal charities and rescue centres, allowing them to focus resources on animals in real need. Microchipping your cat and ensuring your details on the database are up to date is a simple step every owner can take to ensure their cat can always find their way home."

There are around 11 million cats in the UK, which means one in four households has one. Research suggests that England is home to more than 1000 groups dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of pets.

Madison Rogers, head of advocacy, campaigns and government relations for Cats Protection, said around six in 10 cats that come into their care in England are not microchipped. She warned: "It can be impossible to tell if a cat is a stray or has, in fact, got a loving home. Though we do our very best to trace owners, including trawling lost and found registers and using social media, the chances of a successful reunite are much reduced in the absence of a microchip. This places a strain on our resources and means we may need to rehome cats that already have owners."

Madison continued: "We see first-hand why microchipping is so important for cats and the people who love them — whether it's reuniting a lost cat with their owner, identifying an injured cat or helping to ensure an owner can be informed in the sad event that their cat has been hit and killed by a car. We reunite 3000 lost cats with their owners each year — and can vastly improve on this in the future if every pet cat is microchipped."

Pet Health Club is committed to the welfare of pets and encourages all cat owners to microchip their cats before the new law takes effect. To join and get microchipping as part of your benefits, visit https://www.pet-advice.thepethealthclub.co.uk/

Category

Cats

Tags

Cat microchipping

Pet Health Club

Cats Protection

Almost half of all cat owners are unaware how best to protect songbirds

Cats Protection and Songbird Survival are issuing advice to cat owners as a survey shows many aren’t aware of how to reduce their pets’ hunting habits.

The survey of 1,000 cat owners, conducted by Songbird Survival says that almost half of cat owners (46%) aren’t aware of ways to reduce cat predation. When asked to suggest the best ways to reduce hunting, less than one in 10 owners picked out any of the three that are scientifically-proven to work best - keeping cats in at night, feeding cats protein-rich food and playing with cats.

“March is a particularly vulnerable time for songbirds as we are in the nesting and breeding season, which runs up to July,” says Susan Morgan, CEO of Songbird Survival.

“Birds gather materials to make their nests, fledgling birds leave their nests and birds may undertake riskier behaviours to gather food to feed their young. And though many cat owners know and care a great deal about bird conservation and their cats’ impact on it, the survey suggests more education is needed to protect songbird populations. Caring for your cat in a way that helps manage the impact of their hunting habits is a small and instant change that we, as cat owners, can make to help songbird populations thrive.”

Nicky Trevorrow, Behaviour Manager for Cats Protection said: “It’s important to protect songbird populations from decline and cat owners and bird lovers can make a big difference by putting up nest boxes as well as not using pesticides in their gardens.

“Hunting is a natural, innate behaviour for cats and they feel driven to do it. Not all cats hunt and it generally reduces as they age. However, just a few simple strategies can protect birds and benefit your cat’s welfare too.”

Songbird Survival’s and Cats Protection’s top tips are:

Play with your cat for 5-10 minutes every day as it allows them to exhibit their natural hunting behaviour and reduces their motivation to seek out prey. Pick out a toy that mimics prey movement – such as a fishing-rod toy

Feed cats with a premium, meat-rich food as it’s been scientifically shown to reduce hunting tendencies

Keep cats in at night to help songbird populations and to reduce the chances of your cat being involved in a road traffic accident.

Cats Protection also urges people to get their pet cat neutered as it not only reduces cat over-population but also makes them less likely to fight, reducing the spread of infectious disease such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). It also reduces the risk of certain cancers in female cats such as mammary cancer.

Research from Songbird Survival and the University of Exeter shows that regular play with a cat and feeding them a premium diet reduced the amount of prey brought home by a cat by as much as 25% and 36% respectively.

Cats Protection welcomes Animal Welfare (Import of Cats, Dogs and Ferrets) Bill

Cats Protection has welcomed a new law which will ban the import of declawed cats and introduce tougher welfare rules to protect pets being bought into the UK for sale.

The charity says the Animal Welfare (Import of Cats, Dogs and Ferrets) Bill will bring with it much-needed restrictions on the animals which can be imported into the UK, including a ban on transporting heavily pregnant cats and kittens under six months old.

Annabel Berdy, Senior Advocacy & Government Relations Officer for Cats Protection, said: "The main winners from this new law will be the cats and kittens which are brought into the UK every year to be sold on as pets. It will mean that heavily pregnant cats and tiny kittens will no longer be subjected to long, stressful and potentially harmful journeys which could seriously impact their health and welfare.

"Modernising pet import laws is desperately needed to protect animals from being exploited, and will also protect buyers who may be duped into buying sick or poorly socialised animals which have been bred and kept in low welfare environments. This new law will help shine a light on this international pet trade where animals are brought into the UK simply for profit, with no regard for their wellbeing."

As well as tightening controls on importing pregnant cats and young kittens, the new Bill will ban the import of cats which have been declawed – a practice which is already illegal to perform in the UK.

Annabel said: "Declawing is an abhorrent practice in which the claw and part of a bone is removed from each one of a cat's toes. As anyone can imagine, this is painful and uncomfortable, and is likely to cause lifelong discomfort.

"All animals should be able to exhibit normal behaviours – and this is already enshrined in law with the Animal Welfare Act. Scratching is a normal behaviour, and cats which are not able to do this are likely to suffer distress for their entire lives. This is why declawing is already banned in the UK, and this new law will end the loophole which means declawed cats can be brought into the UK for onward sale."

Category

News

Tags

Cats Protection

Animal Welfare (Import of Cats

Dogs and Ferrets) Bill

Declawing cats

Importing cats

Owners across the UK have under two weeks left to enter their extraordinary cat into this year’s National Cat Awards.

Run by the charity Cats Protection, the annual event celebrates the nation’s most marvellous moggies, with heartwarming tales of devotion, courage and companionship.

Owners have until noon on Tuesday 26 March to nominate their cat in one of four categories. Owners or colleagues can also nominate a veterinary professional who has provided exceptional care for a cat in the Vet of the Year category:

Family cats: For cats who make a family complete - whether it’s being there for companionship, providing comfort and support in tough times, or simply keeping everyone amused.

Incredible cats – From heroic cats who save the day to those who have done something truly extraordinary. They might have survived against the odds, returned home after an epic adventure or maybe even saved a life.

Senior cats: Celebrating cats over the age of 11, who might be thriving in their older years or simply enjoying the quieter side of life.

Connected cats: Recognising cats that make us smile. From well connected cats with their own social media following to those who pop up in the local community.

Vet of the Year 2024: For veterinary professionals who have provided outstanding cat care.

Cats Protection’s Marketing and Income Generation Director Catherine Cottrell said: “From heroic to heartwarming, we love hearing how cats have such a positive impact on people’s lives. With under two weeks left before entries close, we’re looking forward to hearing even more stories that we hope will inspire more people to adopt a rescue cat.”

Winners will be selected in a public vote and by a panel of judges before being announced during a ceremony in London on 18 September.

Author and journalist Dawn O’Porter hosted the event last year and will be returning.

“I’m thrilled to be back to present the Cats Protection National Cat Awards again this year, it’s the ultimate event for cat lovers,” she said. “It’s a chance to recognise the UK’s most extraordinary cats and celebrate the relationship with the cats in our lives, because they really do make life better and I’m definitely up for supporting that.”

The Cat of the Year 2024 will be selected from the four category winners. Last year’s winner was Zebby from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, who won the title National Cat of the Year in recognition of the support he gives to his deaf owner by alerting her to sounds and noises around the home.

International Women’s Day – four of the female charity workers championing animal welfare

From helping victim-survivors flee domestic abuse to lobbying politicians to change animal welfare law – Cats Protection is using International Women's Day to celebrate its inspirational female staff.

The charity owes its very existence to women – set up in 1927 by suffragist Jessey Wade, an animal lover and noted women's rights campaigner, who also edited the feminist journal Urania.

Since then, the charity has grown into one of the UK's biggest animal charities, and its work includes campaigning for changes in the law to protect pets, leading veterinary feline medicine research, rehoming cats, and offering services to help renters with pets, domestic abuse victim-survivors and grieving owners.

Some of the inspirational women following in Jessey Wade's footsteps today are:

Madison Rogers, 29, Head of Campaigns, Advocacy & Government Relations

Leading the charity's campaigning team, Madison, 29, spends her days meeting politicians, drafting briefings for parliamentary committees and lobbying for changes in law on animal welfare issues. Despite being interested in politics from an early age, she says it hasn't always been easy to be a woman – particularly in her 20s - in public affairs. Having led some of the charity's most high profile campaigns to change welfare legislation, she also works to help other women get on the ladder and is an advisor on the Senior Women in Public Affairs (WiPA) Committee. She says: "Politics is a male dominated industry and it can be hard for women to get their voices heard. I have been to meetings or events where I am the only women in the room, which can be daunting. To overcome this I remind myself that I am there because I deserve to be. This experience has also made me want to be a positive role model in my career and in my role as a leader at Cats Protection I actively encourage participation through creating safe and supportive networks where others feel able to have their voices heard and valued."

Amy Hyde, 33, Manager of Cats Protection's Lifeline service

Amy heads the Cats Protection Lifeline service, which provides free and confidential fostering service for owners fleeing domestic abuse. With most refuges unable to accept pets, it is feared many victim-survivors may find it harder to escape domestic abuse for fear of what may happen to their pet. With the charity's Lifeline service, cats are cared for in a home environment allowing their owners to seek help to escape and settle into a safe new home. Amy says: "Domestic abuse is incredibly common in the UK and sadly it will likely touch many of us directly, or perhaps our friends and family. It can of course happen to anyone, of any age, gender or background. I have been working within domestic abuse pet fostering services for over 11 years now and during this time we have seen many challenging cases that involve abuse to both people and animals. What makes it easier for me is knowing that there is support available for both the survivor and their pet, and that it will only be a matter of time before they are safely reunited again. Our Lifeline team is also made up of so many inspirational women who go above and beyond every single day, doing as much as they possibly can to support survivors, cats and our incredible foster carers. Working within this amazing team and seeing so many reunions makes everything worthwhile. International Women's Day for me is about celebrating and recognising the power of women – we support women everyday who show the greatest amount of strength and courage in the most difficult situations, as well as our colleagues in the domestic abuse sector who dedicate their lives to ending violence against women and girls. We also have an incredible group of foster carers who open up their homes and hearts to cats in need, knowing one day that they will be reunited with their loving owner. International Women's Day, for me, is a time to recognise these women and the progress that has already been made, whilst still driving towards a safer and more inclusive world for women."

Sue Ben-Saud, 57, Manager of Cats Protection Bridgend Adoption Centre

Sue has been the manager of the charity's largest centre in Wales for over 25 years and is known for her limitless energy and upbeat attitude. What many people don't realise, however, is that she has also fought a battle with bowel cancer and is now living with incurable blood cancer. Throughout it all, her job in helping cats has helped her cope – even when her treatment meant she couldn't leave her home. Sue says: "After starting treatment I was fortunate to be able to start working from home. It wouldn't be right for everybody, but it was normal for me and even when I had my last cancer I returned as soon as possible for the sense of normality. I love my job and so we did a lot using technology, for example I took part in vet runs via WhatsApp. The average remission is four years, but the reality of my life now is realising what further damage myeloma will do in the future. When you're living it, you don't think about it, but sometimes it just hits you and you break down. It's always on your mind, the 'what ifs' are always there. I'd like to think I have another 10 years but realistically I may not. I take each day as it comes and celebrate the good days when I can. I've gone from doing half marathons to struggling to just do a short trip or walk down the stairs on some days. It's really hard – my daughter sometimes has to remind me to take it easy! A pain specialist once said 'you have to take your pain and put it in your pocket' and I try to live by that. I had to adjust to being a new person after my first cancer and have had to do it again. I am very grateful to be alive and although I recognise my life is limited, I try not to dwell on it. I don't want to be at home avoiding things or closeting myself away to avoid potential infections. I hope my story inspires other women on International Women's Day to realise that we all have a reserve of inner strength which helps us to cope in time of adversity and whatever your circumstances are I would urge you to go after their dreams and what makes you happy in life."

	Elle Boden, 32, Behaviour Officer.

After training as a veterinary nurse, Elle was driven by her interest in psychology and love of animals to specialise in animal behaviour. She set up her own business helping cat owners deal with behavioural concerns before joining Cats Protection. She said: "I've always been fascinated with psychology and from a young age I was surrounded by animals, so my job is a dream come true. I love being part of a charity which is working to change how we think about cats – challenging the assumptions that all cats are aloof, or that they are independent and don't need the same level of care as other pets. I work in a female dominated industry, both in veterinary nursing and now as a behaviourist, so competition is high between women. However, I think a major challenge has been being a mother and taking time out to have children, along with juggling the two roles, which can all leave you feeling left behind. Priorities shift after having children, but it shouldn't mean that you cannot continue to further your career. The progress to where you want to get to may be slower but that shouldn't deter us from reaching our ambitions and career goals. It is so important to celebrate women, whether that be professionally or personally and reflect on how much women have contributed to society and science I think International Women's Day is also a time for reflection on your own journey and how far you have come. Every woman should be regularly reflecting and giving themselves an enormous pat on the back at everything they have achieved."

Cats Protection has appointed a new Advocacy and Influence Director as the charity continues to grow its ambitions and increase its impact on cat welfare.

Jeff Knott is currently Director of Policy and Advocacy at RSPB and will move to his new role on 1 May.

He will lead the charity's newly formed Advocacy and Influence directorate and will be part of the Senior Leadership team, reporting to Chief Executive John May.

"We're really looking forward to welcoming Jeff to lead our new directorate," said John. "We're looking to create change that will have a long-term impact on cat welfare and society and Jeff brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience which will help build on our reach and influence with governments, influencers and the general public across the UK."

Previous roles Jeff has held at RSPB include Operations Director for Central and Eastern England and Head of Nature Policy.

Having spent the last 16 years working in nature conservation, he says he's excited to make this move to help give cats a voice.

"One of the best things about working for a charity is how dedicated everyone is to the cause," said Jeff. "There's nothing more energising than spending time with passionate people and I'm really looking forward to supporting Cats Protection in delivering our mission. I've admired the organisation for a long time and I'm hugely excited to join the team."

Jeff currently lives in Huntingdon with his family, which includes their 14-year-old tortoiseshell cat called Pumpkin.

Category

News

Tags

Cats Protection

Charity warns against giving cats a bath - despite what's shown on social media

An animal charity is warning owners not to wash their cats unnecessarily after noticing an uplift in cat bathing videos on social media sites.

Cats Protection is concerned that inexperienced cat lovers are being encouraged to bathe their cats which, it says, is rarely needed and often distressing.

The welfare charity warns that washing a cat can strip their coat of essential oils which are needed for their skin to add a layer of waterproofing and can also remove flea control treatments.

To raise awareness, Cats Protection has released a video on Instagram Reels and TikTok, which can be found www.instagram.com/catsprotection or www.tiktok.com/@cats_protection

"It's no myth that cats don't like water and, as long as they are grooming themselves, they should stay clean," said Elin Williams, Cats Protection's Regional Behaviour Officer. "If really necessary, using a soft cloth soaked in warm water will be enough to remove most dirt."

Elin points out that domestic cats are evolved from the African wildcat, whose natural habitats were deserts, so being immersed in water is unnatural to them.

"It can also affect your cat's pheromones which they use to scent mark their territory," says Elin."

The charity advises only bathing a cat if recommended by a vet and, in these cases, it should only be with water or a small amount of fragrance-free cat shampoo.

"Cats have a different skin PH to us so even a mild shampoo often too harsh for cats," says Elin. Long-haired cats usually need extra help grooming, with daily brushing, to keep their fur in tip top shape.

"If your cat stops grooming themselves for whatever reason then we'd always suggest speaking to your vet first as any changes in behaviour may indicate there's something wrong."

More tips on grooming cats and other cat care videos are available on Cats Protection's YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/@catsprotection

Category

Cats

Tags

Bathing cats

Cleaning cats

Cats Protection

Pet Abduction Bill “a desperately needed safety net” for nation’s pets, says animal charity

The UK's biggest cat charity Cats Protection has again welcomed the Pet Abduction Bill after it cleared another hurdle through parliament today.

The Bill – proposed by Anna Firth MP – will give cats and their owners greater protection in law and help prevent pet theft.

Annabel Berdy, Senior Advocacy & Government Relations Officer for Cats Protection said: "This proposed law is a desperately needed safety net for the nation's pets, helping to stamp out the criminals who prey on much-loved animals. Pet abduction is a particularly nasty crime, often leaving owners in permanent limbo about the fate of their pets and putting the animals themselves at high risk of mistreatment.

"Currently, the theft of an animal is regarded in law as being level with the theft of a mobile phone – and that is clearly not the case. Pets are not merely property – they are sentient beings, capable of suffering pain and fear, and are utterly irreplaceable to their owners. A new and specific offence will also enable police to build an accurate picture of pet theft across England and Northern Ireland by requiring a specific log, as opposed to the current situation where pet theft is recorded as property theft."

The charity added that the new law would help tackle the backstreet market in purebred cats and kittens, driven by a growing demand for pedigrees.

Annabel said: "More than 40 per cent of all cats obtained in the last 12 months were pedigree, and criminals will no doubt capitalise on this demand. They may target pedigree cats for onward sale, or – if they're unneutered – keep them as breeding animals to produce litter after litter of kittens to sell.

"We're hugely encouraged to see the Pet Abduction Bill making such swift progress through parliament and will be working tirelessly with other animal charities and politicians to push it forwards. We cannot let this important opportunity to protect pets and owners slip through our hands."

Cats Protection is the UK's leading cat welfare charity and has helped an average of 157,000 cats and kittens a year over the last five years through its national network which includes around 210 volunteer-run branches and 34 centres.

Category

Cats

News

Tags

Cats Protection

Pet Abduction Bill
